Ian joined Broadway Malyan in 1999 and has been a Main Board Director since 2007. He is chairman of the Europe/Middle-East/Africa (EMEA) regional board and in 2015 returned to London after spending six years running the Practice’s Middle East operation.
Ian works across the Middle East and increasingly in Africa. He has made a name for himself designing complex, mixed-use projects such as the high-profile Hazza Bin Zayed Stadium project, a 26,000 seat showpiece stadium in Abu Dhabi with connected retail, hotel and residential. He also works regionally within the education sector, leading Broadway Malyan’s work on the Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC) Future Schools Programme as well as the Prototype Schools Programme for the Qatari government. Together these have led to the rollout of state of the art schools across the Middle East.
With a passionate interest in the challenges facing a fast-developing World, Ian focuses on the social and cultural, as well as the technological aspects of design. He spends much of his time assembling diverse multi-disciplinary teams, building the right mix of skills and personalities to ensure a project’s success.
Ian’s strong reputation in the Middle East has led to his being recognised in 2015 as one of the 20 most powerful architects working in the region.
